The Puerto de Lázaro Cárdenas lies at the mouth of the Río Balsas on México’s south-central Pacific shores in the State of Michoacán about 270 kilometers northwest of Acapulco. Known in the past as Los Llanitos, the city changed its name in 1970 to honor local hero Lázaro Cárdenas del Río, President of Mexico from 1934 to 1940. In 2005, almost 75 thousand people lived in the Puerto de Lázaro Cárdenas, while the metropolitan area was home to about 163 thousand souls.
