Port of Shahid Rajaee
Review and History

The Port of Shahid Rajaee is located lies on the north shores of the Strait of Hormuz in southern Iran about nine nautical miles (14.5 kilometers or nine mile) west-southwest of the Port of Bandar Abbas, of which it is a part. The Port of Shahid Rajaee is some 565 nautical miles (770 kilometers or almost 480 miles) southeast of Iran's Imam Khomeini Port, and it is about 1500 kilometers (933 miles) southeast of Tehran.

The Port of Shahid Rajaee covers about 2400 hectares and handles 70 million tons of cargo per year, including three million TEUs of containerized cargo. The Port of Shahid Rajaee contains 23 berths with alongside depth of 15 meters (49.2 feet). The Port of Shahid Rajaee maintains over 19 hectares of roofed warehouses and 23.5 kilometers (14.6 miles) of domestic railway tracks. Another 16 kilometers (almost 10 miles) of railway are under construction.

The development plan for the Port of Shahid Rajaee outlined two phases to add berths capable of berthing the largest modern vessels and to expand the port area and operations. Phase 1 has been completed. It added two new container berths that can accommodate seventh generation container ships and to handle three million TEUs. Each of these new Port of Shahid Rajaee container berths is 1000 meters (3281 feet) in length with alongside depth of 17 meters (55.8 feet).

Phase 1 upgraded the Port of Shahid Rajaee with capacity to berth vessels to 145 thousand DWT. Also part of Phase 1 in the Port of Shahid Rajaee, the entrance channel and the basin were dredged to bring the port to a volume of 11.5 million cubic meters. The Port of Shahid Rajaee's container yard was also expanded to 67 hectares.

Phase 2 of the Port of Shahid Rajaee development plan, which is in progress, calls for the development of new berths of 2020 meters (6627 feet) with alongside depth of 16 meters (52.5 meters) and the dredging of second and third basins. Phase 2 includes adding a container stacking area in the Port of Shahid Rajaee and the addition of 18 sixth-generation gantry cranes and 45 transtainers. In order to speed the construction process, the Port of Shahid Rajaee's Phase 2 includes the creation of a transit and bunkering terminal in partnership with the private sector.

In the eastern the Port of Shahid Rajaee complex, Phase 2 also calls for establishing of a transit and oil export function. The new terminal will be located near the oil cargo berths and will be connected to the country's rail network, facilitating the processing of oil cargo.

Berths 4, 5, 6, 7, 25, 26, and 27 in the Port of Shahid Rajaee handle containerized cargo. The total length of these berths is 2270 meters (7447 feet), and they have with maximum alongside ship drafts from 11.3 meters (37.1 feet) to 14.5 meters (47.6 meters) Berths 4 through 7 can handle throughput to 60 thousand tons, and Berths 25 through 27 can handle throughput to 145 thousand tons. Berths 21 through 24, which will be dedicated to containerized cargo, are under construction.

The Port of Shahid Rajaee's Berths 9, 10, 11, 12, 17, 18, and 19 specialize in general cargo, and each has capacity for 45 thousand tons of throughput. These berths total 1740 meters (5709 feet) in length and have maximum alongside ship drafts from 9.85 meters (32.3 feet) to 10.35 meters (34 feet).

The Port of Shahid Rajaee contains four berths (Berths 13 through 16) for special cargo. Each of these berths is 300 meters (984 feet) long and has capacity for throughput of 60 thousand tons. Berths 13 and 14 have maximum alongside draft of 11.5 meters (37.7 feet). Berth 15 has maximum alongside draft of 11.36 meters (36.1 feet), and Berth 16 has maximum alongside draft of 10 feet (32.8 feet).

The Port of Shahid Rajaee contains two multi-purpose berths with capacity for throughput of 30 thousand tons. Berth 3 is 190 meters (623 feet) long with maximum alongside draft of 11 meters (36.1 feet). Berth 20 is 175 meters long (574 feet) with maximum alongside draft of 10 meters (32.8 feet) There are also two oil berths in the Port of Shahid Rajaee, each of them 228 meters (748 feet) long with maximum alongside draft of 11.35 meters (37.2 feet). Each of these Port of Shahid Rajaee berths can handle throughput of 70 thousand tons. Berth 8 in the Port of Shahid Rajaee specializes in handling barges. It is 100 meters (328 feet) long with maximum alongside draft of 4.8 meters (15.7 feet).

The Port of Shahid Rajaee has ten Persian Gulf berths with a total length of one thousand meters (3281 feet) and maximum alongside draft of from 7.0 to 7.5 meters (23 to 24.6 feet). Berths 4, 5, 6, and 9 are a total of 330 meters (1083 feet) long with maximum alongside draft of 7.5 meters (24.6 feet). Berth 4 has capacity for eight thousand tons, and Berths 5 and 9 have throughput capacity for six thousand tons. Berths 2, 3, and 8 are multi-purpose berths with a total length of 305 meters. Berth 2 is 100 meters (328 feet) long with maximum alongside draft of 7.0 meters (23 feet) and can handle throughput of 600 tons. Berth 3 is 80 meters (262 feet) long with maximum alongside draft of 7.5 meter (23 feet), and Berth 8 is 125 meters (410 feet) long. The Port of Shahid Rajaee has two Persian Gulf berths for bulk cargoes, each of them 125 meters (410 feet) long.

The Foolad Hormozgan Complex in the Port of Shahid Rajaee has two berths, each of them 260 meters (853 feet) long with maximum draft of 13.5 meters (44.3 feet) and throughput capacity for 100 thousand tons. Berth 1 handles oil and steel, and Berth two handles all other cargo.

The Port of Shahid Rajaee has 23 transit and cargo warehouses with a total area of 19.3 hectares. The Port of Shahid Rajaee contains ten transit warehouses covering a total 8.6 hectares, each of which covers 8640 square meters (93 thousand square feet). These include an export warehouse, six transit warehouses for chemical materials, and three transit warehouses for breakbulk cargoes. The eight cargo warehouses in the Port of Shahid Rajaee, each of which also covers 8640 square meters, cover a total of 6.9 hectares. There are two cargo warehouses in the Port of Shahid Rajaee dedicated for breakbulk cargo, one for packaged cargo, and one for domestic imports. There are also cargo warehouses for maritime equipment, customs, and spare parts. Other warehouses in the Port of Shahid Rajaee handle break bulk cargo. They include the new 2.9-acre Container Freight Station Warehouse, the old 8640-meter (93 thousand square foot) Old Warehouse, the 4153 square meter (one acre) Persian Gulf CFM Warehouse, the 8306 square meter (2.1 acre) CRM Warehouse behind the security office, and the 4622 square meter (1.1 acre) waste warehouse.
