The Port of Aratu lies on the shores of the Caboto Bay inside the Bay of All Saints (Baia de Todos os Santos) near the city of Candeias and about 1300 kilometers northeast of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.
Construction of the Port of Aratu began in 1971 by a partnership between the Centro Industrial de Aratu and the government of the Brazilian state of Bahia. Created as an industrial site, the first phase of the project included a pier, terminal, and storage yard for solid bulk cargoes as well as energy and roads. With the Bahia government as a shareholder, the Port of Aratu facilities were considered part of the assets of the Centro Industrial de Aratu.
