The Port of Puerto Cabello has a growing tourism sector due to its location on the Caribbean Sea and its rich historical heritage. The city's streets retain their rustic colonial appearance, including several mansions. Cobblestone streets lend a romantic air to the town. Still standing is the huge Castillo del Libertador, a fort that protected colonial residents when pirates invaded the city.
The Port of Puerto Cabello is also the birthplace of South American hero and liberator, Simon Bolivar. The hero's birthplace is preserved next door to a museum honoring his memory. The home is one a well-preserved colonial building containing wonderful paintings and a small museum. The Museo Bolivariano (Spanish, requires Java) next door contains a collection of Bolivar's war relics.
