Yankee Magazine called Freeport Harbor the Best Shopping Town in New England. This beautiful coastal village has more than 200 outlets, shops, boutiques, hotels, bed and breakfasts, restaurants, and cafes.

Freeport Harbor has a humid continental climate that has large temperature differences between seasons. Summers are warm and often humid, and winters can be severely cold. Summer rains come with thunderstorms and the occasional tropical storm. Snow can be heavy and deep in the winter. Freeport Harbor's temperatures range from an average high of 21°C (70°F) in July and August to an average low of -1°C (30°F) in January. Rain is lightest in August (3 inches) and heaviest in November and March (about 4.5 inches). In January, snowfall can reach over 19 inches.

Just five minutes away from Freeport Harbor, the 223-acre Wolfe's Neck Woods State Park is has five miles of shoreline and woodland hiking offering views of the salt marshes, Harraseeket River, and Casco Bay. The park features a variety of ecosystems that include hemlock and climax white pine forests, rocky shorelines, and a salt marsh estuary. Its most popular residents are the osprey who nest on nearby Googins Island in the summer. Visitors can picnic under the oak trees or at the new shelter area with a barbecue. They can also participate in a one-hour guided walk. Popular activities in this Freeport Harbor park include bird-watching, hiking, viewing wildlife, show-shoeing, and cross-country skiing. Admission is $3 for adults, $1 for children from 5 to 11. Those under five and over 65 are admitted free.

L.L. Bean's flagship store is open in Freeport Harbor 24 hours a day throughout the year, and the company headquarters are located nearby. In 2012, L.L. Bean celebrates its 100th anniversary, and the company will celebrate all year with events and activities.

In addition to shopping, Freeport Harbor's L.L. Bean offers Walk-On Adventures. With equipment provided, kayakers as young as eight years old can learn the basics about kayaking, develop basic boating and safety skills, or learn about advanced strokes and efficient boat handling. There are also custom boat adventures, private lessons, and island-hopping trips in Casco Bay.

Freeport Harbor's L.L. Bean offers fly-casting lessons and adventures for all ages to a minimum of eight years old. Beginners can learn basic casting skills. A two-day introductory course helps casters learn more than that, and a half-day distance and advanced casting techniques course is also available. L.L. Bean also offers similar courses in shooting (to age 12), archery, snow-shoeing, and cross-country skiiing in Freeport Harbor.
