Dana Point Harbor is both a beautiful harbor and a busy portside community that offers modern amenities for visitors and residents. Divided into the East and West Basin, each basin operates as a separate marina. Combined, they offer over 2400 slips and 500 dry boat storage spaces for a variety of vessels. The Dana Point Harbor also has 50 guest slips for boats traveling the coast and yacht clubs.
Dana Point Harbor has a mild climate with comfortable temperatures that range from 26 °C (79 °F) in August to 6 °C (43 °F) in December. Temperatures can vary from day to night. Rainfall is limited and fairly evenly distributed throughout the year.
Several companies in Dana Point Harbor offer charter services and public fishing trips. Dana Wharf Sportfishing and Whale Watching offers fishing trips throughout the year that are not just for fishermen. Captain Dave's Whale and Dolphin Safaris takes visitors aboard a high-tech catamaran sailboat to see herds of dolphin (sometimes five thousand strong) and migrating gray and blue whales. An underwater hydrophone lets visitors listen to the animals while a marine naturalist shares marine mammal artifacts and talks about the animals. The 82-foot Schooner Curlew was built in 1926 in Maine, and she went on to win many races on the East Coast during the 1920s and 1930s. Today, the Curlew can accommodate 36 passengers for private charters that include corporate events, family gatherings, and small weddings. Many other charters are available in Dana Point Harbor.
