The Puerto de Lázaro Cárdenas is a major seaport, and the city concentrates on shipping, industry, and business. It is not a popular tourist destination, but it is a gateway to vacation resorts on the Michoacán coast.
Just 20 kilometers northwest of the Puerto de Lázaro Cárdenas, Playa Azul is a popular tourist town with luxury accommodations and facilities for golf, diving, and fishing as well as a luxury spa. The resort city and Port of Manzanillo is about 60 kilometers to the northwest. Visitors to that resort have a wide range of choices: deep-sea fishing, eco-tours, kayaking, snorkeling, scuba diving, surfing, shopping, and volcano expeditions and tours. About 77 kilometers to the southeast of the Puerto de Lázaro Cárdenas is Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo, a resort area with everything a sea-loving visitor can imagine.
