Located on the Tropic of Cancer, the Port of Altamira is blessed with a wonderful year-round climate. The Port of Altamira is home to some of Mexico’s most important petrochemical plants, but it also has some of the best beaches and lagoons in all of the State of Tamaulipas. Altamira Beach and the Golden Dunes Beach are popular places for both residents and visitors.
The lagoons of Champayan and Marismas are favorite spots for fishermen, environmental tourists, and photographers. They also include several archaeological ruins. The 18th Century Temple of Santiago Apostol in downtown Altamira is a national landmark.
Playa Tesoro is a very special place. Each year, dark-grown and green turtles come to the beach to lay their eggs. The city has been working on protection efforts for the turtles since 1994, as the species are considered to be near extinction. They rescue and nurture the new eggs. In 2008, they freed about a thousand new turtles on Playa Tesoro to return to the sea.
