Port of Abashiri
Cruising and Travel

The City of Abashiri is surrounded by the sea to the north and five lakes inland. While it has a coastal climate, it enjoys four distinct seasons. Compared to other towns in Hokkaido Prefecture, it has a relatively mild climate with lower levels of rain and snow.

The most famous sight in the Port of Abashiri is the Abashiri Prison Museum. Located in the original prison buildings, the museum contains wax models of prisoners as well as a collection of shackles and other prison items.

The Museum of Northern Peoples documents the lives of northern peoples worldwide, including the Inuit, Lapps, and many others.

The Okhotsk Ryuhyo Museum is devoted to a common phenomenon in the local seas, pack ice. In the winter from January through April, the town offers the icebreaker Aurora for one-hour tours of the pack ice.
