Even though it is the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi, and his home is now a temple of peace, there is little tourism in the Port of Porbandar. However, the town has a wonderful beach and clean ocean waters. Much of the area’s employment comes from the fishing industry.

The birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi is believed to be over 165 years old. The room where he was born (on the ground floor) and his room (on the second floor) are well-preserved today. Today, it is called the Abode of Peace, and it was officially opened in 1950. The monument Kirti Mandir stands 79 feet tall, and 79 Diyas on the walls illustrate the saint at the time of his death. Kirti Mandir also has a museum and library dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi.
