At the beginning of 2009, there was a significant Russian military presence in the Port of Poti, and travelers were being warned not to visit the city.

In December 2008, the United States’ Department of State issued a warning to US citizens of both ongoing violence and a risk of unexploded ordnance remaining in areas where there was fighting, particularly in the separatist regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. The State Department urges US citizens who must travel to Georgia to register and communicate frequently with the US Embassy in Tbilisi.
