Port Gentil and the country of Gabon have a tropical climate that is always hot and humid, but it is cooler from June to September (from 20-25ºC or 68-77ºF). Independent from France since 1960, the country began a multi-party system and constitution in the 1990s with a relatively transparent electoral process. Due to its rich natural resources, limited population, and foreign investments, Gabon is one of Africa’s most prosperous nations.

The U.S. Department of State warns its citizens to be cautious when traveling in Gabon, where petty thievery is common and violent crime occurs in urban areas. Visitors should carry minimal cash, although credit cards are not widely accepted, and avoid wearing jewelry.
