The City of Baranquilla is a cosmopolitan industrial city and the Golden Gate of Colombia. Its major tourist attraction is the four-day long Carnaval de Barranquilla that takes place every February before Ash Wednesday.

In 2003, UNESCO proclaimed the carnaval one of the world’s 47 Masterpieces of the Intangible Heritage of Humanity. Some people claim that the only festival surpassing the Carnaval de Barranquilla is in Rio de Janeiro. Costumed participants enjoy parades, concerts, dances, distinctive festive foods, and a variety of cultural celebrations and events.
