The Instituto Puerto Autonomo de Puerto Cabello (IPAPC) is the port authority for the Port of Puerto Cabello. The Port of Puerto Cabello's goal is to be the country's major port and a leader in Latin America and the Caribbean. IPAPC assures high-quality harbor services, develops and modernizes port infrastructure, works to maintain positive and productive partnerships, and supports the economic growth of the Venezuelan economy.
In 2008, a total of 1966 vessels visited the Port of Puerto Cabello, including 1133 container vessels. The Port of Puerto Cabello handled a total of 9.5 million metric tons of cargo, including 4.7 million metric tons of containerized cargo in 475.3 thousand TEUs, 3.8 million metric tons of bulk cargo, and 966.6 thousand metric tons of loose cargoes.
The cargo included 8.5 million metric tons of imports, 603 thousand metric tons of exports, 211.1 thousand metric tons of transshipments, and 207.9 thousand metric tons of cabotage.
Area I in the Port of Puerto Cabello contains 11 wharves with a total length of 1790 meters and alongside depth of 9.1 meters. Serving passenger vessels and ferries, Wharves 1 and 2 are 137 meters long, and Wharf 3 is 150 meters long. Wharves 4 through 11 in the Port of Puerto Cabello specialize in handling general and roll-on/roll-off cargoes. Wharves 4 through 7 are each 150 meters long. Wharves 8 and 9 are each 173 meters long, and Wharves 10 and 11 are 210 meters long each.
The Port of Puerto Cabello's Area II contains two wharves, both with alongside depth of 9.1 meters. Wharf 12 is 260 meters long and handles general and roll-on/roll-off cargoes. Wharf 13, handling cabotage, is 140 meters long.
Three wharves in Area IV in the Port of Puerto Cabello specialize in handling containerized cargoes. Each wharf (22-24) is 185 meters long with alongside depth of 10.7 meters. Also a container wharf, Wharf 24-A in the Port of Puerto Cabello's Area V is 302 meters long alongside depth of 9.1 meters.
The Port of Puerto Cabello's Area I SAW contains eight wharves with alongside depth of 10.7 meters handling containers and bulk cargoes. Handling containers, Wharves 25 and 26 are each 204 meters long. Also handling containers, Wharf 27 is 206 meters long. Wharves 28-32 all specialize in handling bulk cargoes. Wharves 28, 29, and 30 are each 200 meters long. Wharves 31 and 32 are 203 meters long.
Port of Puerto Cabello facilities include silos with capacity for 25 thousand tons for storing a variety of grains. Ten warehouses offer capacity for 70 thousand of cargo, and 60 hectares within the Port of Puerto Cabello is dedicated to handling containers. The Port of Puerto Cabello offers the full range of support services and equipment to support visiting cargo vessels.
