The City's Board of Harbor Commissioners, assisted by the Department of Public Works, has jurisdiction over the Port of Kenosha's commercial harbor. The Common Council of the City has jurisdiction over the Port of Kenosha's Southport Marina, Simmons Island Marina, and the Sailboat Basin and supporting facilities and land. Supervised by the Park Commission, the Department of Public Works, prepares the budget for the facilities, and the Marina Commission makes recommendations related to facility operations.
The Board of Commissioners employs the Harbor Master. The Port of Kenosha Harbor Master is responsible for vessel movements within the harbor and for assuring safety for vessels using the harbor.
The commercial harbor for the Port of Kenosha extends between the North and South Piers and the turning basin. The Sailboat Basin consists of the navigable waters of Kenosha Harbor from 50th Street to just south of the US Coast Guard Station, but does not include the Kenosha Yacht Club.
Kenosha Harbor is a deep-draft commercial harbor serving mainly recreational traffic. An entrance breakwater protects the Port of Kenosha harbor entrance and 1615-meter (5300-foot) pier. The harbor supports recreational boaters and charter fishing vessels.
The city-owned Simmons Island Marina is operated by Great Lakes Yacht Sales in the Port of Kenosha. Catering to power boats, the marina contains 142 boat slips and six launch ramps. On-site amenities at the Port of Kenosha's Simmons Island Marina includes water, electricity, and telephone; floating docks; private restrooms and showers; a fish-cleaning session; on-site mechanical services; and full-service winter storage. The marina has controlled-access parking lots and nightly uniformed security. It is within walking distance of the Port of Kenosha's downtown shopping, restaurants, and the historic downtown district. It has a convenience store and a landscaped picnic area.
The Port of Kenosha's Southport Marina is a public facility located in the center of the new HarborPark development and downtown businesses services. The Southpark Marina in the Port of Kenosha has a full-service fuel dock, transient slips, outside storage, a 75-ton Travelift, and on-site brokerage and mechanical services. Facilities at this Port of Kenosha marina include a heated in-ground pool, a hot tub, heated inside storage, laundry facilities, free Wi-Fi, a building for the boater community, and a ship's store.
The 250-slip Southport Marina in the Port of Kenosha has easy-to-access a 1.8-acre winter storage facility that can accommodate vessels up to 75 tons. The marina also has 200 slots for outdoor storage. Its Customer Service Department has seven factory-certified technicians that can address all aspects of boat and yacht repairs and maintenance.
HarborPark is a redeveloped industrial space on the Port of Kenosha Harbor that contains a park and open space, a public museum, a marina, and residential housing. HarborPark has promenades attract hikers, skate boarders, roller bladers, and bicyclers. It is the center for special events in the community. Facilities include an interactive water feature, a recreation trail, and a playground. The Port of Kenosha's electric streetcar system stops at the 70-acre HarborPark.
