The Nantucket Harbor and Shellfish Advisory Board makes recommendations to the town's Board of Selectmen on how to best manage and use the marine resources, including the water, of Nantucket Harbor and on the duties and responsibilities of the town's harbormaster.

Specifically, the Harbor and Shellfish Advisory Board is charged with ensuring the sustainability of Nantucket Harbor's natural marine resources for commercial and recreational purposes; to maintain, protect, and enhance Nantucket Harbor's waters; to assure balanced use of Nantucket Harbor waters for commercial, recreational, and family activities; and to support Town-generated plans for harbors, estuaries, shellfish, and coastal zone management.

Nantucket Harbor offers transient dockage for vessels less than 9.1 meters (30 feet) long on a first come, first served basis. The Nantucket Harbormaster does not accept reservations. Services available to boaters using the docks include fresh water, free bathroom and shower facilities, free pump-out, weather reports, and tide charts. There is also a dumpster and recycling area. Ice can also be purchased in Nantucket Harbor.

As boaters approach Nantucket Harbor, they may be welcomed by harbor seals that often sun on the local jetties. Brand Point Lighthouse marks the entrance to Nantucket Harbor and the point at which boaters should call VHF Channel 68 for an escort to their rented mooring.

Established in 1978, Nantucket Moorings offers 125 rental moorings for use by transient boaters visiting Nantucket Harbor. There are two free dingy docks available at the town dock and a harbor launch service. Showers are located at the Nantucket Harbor Town Dock, and pump-out, fresh water, garbage, and ice are available at the Town Pier. Reservations are recommended.

In the Nantucket Boat Basin, boaters will be treated to high-quality marina services. On the west side of Nantucket Harbor, the full-service marina has 240 slips. Located just two blocks from Nantucket Harbor Town, the Nantucket Boat Basin has received the Clean Harbor Award during Nantucket Race Week. Early bookings are recommended.
