Located in the heart of the United States on the Mississippi River, the Tri-City Regional Port District provides a variety of services and facilities that support the transfer of goods by barge, rail, and truck throughout the region and to international destinations. This special-purpose unit of local government is charged with developing the southwestern Illinois economy by creating and maintaining a multi-purpose port district.
The Tri-City Regional Port District owns the Port of Granite City Dock No. 2 operated by the Bulk Service Corporation. The dock is used to ship grain and grain by-products, soda ash, and various dry-bulk cargoes, including coal. Three surface tracks with capacity for 60 cars connect the terminal to the Norfolk Southern Railway. The facility is a public dry-bulk terminal, and all cargo is directly transferred from railcar to barge. The Port of Granite City Dock No. 2 has berthing space of 183 meters (600 feet) with alongside depth of 4.6 meters (15 feet).
The Tri-City Regional Port District owns, and the Lewis & Clark Marine, Inc. operates the Tri-City Regional Port District Fleet Mooring in the Port of Granite City. The facility has capacity to moor 100 barges for fleeting. The Port of Granite City Fleet Mooring has berthing space of 79 meters (259 feet) with alongside depth of 3.7 meters (12 feet).
The Tri-City Regional Port District and US Army Corp of Engineers jointly own, and US Steel Granite City Works operates the Port of Granite City Works River Dock and Fleet Mooring. Used to receive steel slabs and dry-bulk materials for use by the steel mill, this Port of Granite City Mooring also ships steel products like coils and sheets. The facility is served by two surface tracks with capacity for 60 cars that connect with the Norfolk Southern Railway. Materials are moved directly between truck or railcar and barge. This Port of Granite City Mooring has berthing space of 251.5 meters (825 feet) with alongside depth of 3 meters (10 feet).
The Bulk Service Corporation owns and operates the Port of Granite City Dock No. 1 to ship grain and grain by-products, soda ash, soybean meal, and various dry-bulk commodities. The Port of Granite City Dock No. 1 is a public dry-bulk terminal. Four surface tracks with capacity for 80 cars connect the dock to the Norfolk Southern Railway. At the rear of the dock are two storage domes with capacity for 20 thousand tons of materials. There is also an open storage area with capacity for 50 thousand tons of sand and gravel. This Port of Granite City dock has berthing space of 152.4 meters (500 feet) with alongside depth of 4.6 meters (15 feet).
The Mid-Coast Terminal Company owns and operates at the Port of Granite City Dock to ship and receive general cargo, dry- and liquid-bulk fertilizer, steel, packaged goods, fertilizer, and various dry-bulk cargoes. This Port of Granite City facility is a public dry- and liquid-bulk terminal. Three surface tracks at the rear of the dock transit sheds connect with the Norfolk Southern Railway. A pipeline connects the dock to three liquid-fertilizer storage tanks at the terminal with total capacity for 3 million gallons. The Port of Granite City Dock has berthing space of 122 meters (400 feet) with alongside depth of 4.6 meters (15 feet).
The Centerpoint Terminal Company owns, and Apex Oil's Petroleum Fuel and Terminal Company operates at the Port of Granite City Dock to receive and ship asphalt. The facility serves as a public liquid-bulk terminal. Two surface tracks with 8-car capacity and a 16-car rack for unloading at the terminal connect with the Norfolk Southern Railway. A pipeline for coal tar serves the wharf. Two pipelines connect the wharf to nine asphalt storage tanks with capacity for 827 thousand barrels. This portion of the Port of Granite City Dock has berthing space of 132.6 meters (435 feet) with alongside depth of 4.6 meters (15 feet).
Located in Venice, Beelman River Terminals Inc. owns and operates the Port of Granite City's Venice Dock. The dock is used to ship and receive general cargo and heavy-lift commodities. It also ships and receives dry-bulk cargoes that include grain, sand, coal, scrap metal, coke, and ores as well as liquid-bulk commodities. The Port of Granite City's Venice Dock is primarily a direct-transfer facility; however, it also has 40 acres of open storage area with capacity for as much as 400 thousand tons of goods. The Port of Granite City's Venice Dock has berthing space of 396.2 meters (1300 feet) with alongside depth of 4.6 meters (15 feet).
