The Autoridad Maritima Portuaria (AMP) is the port authority for the Port of Acajutla and all of El Salvador’s ports, railroads, and airports. The AMP develops infrastructure and manages operations of the nation’s ports according to modern management principles and strives to provide the most efficient and safe services possible.
In 2008, the Port of Acajutla handled a total of over 4.4 million tons of cargo carried on 625 vessels, including 3.3 million tons of imports and 1.1 million tons of exports. Within that total, the Port of Acajutla handled 1.6 million tons of solid bulk, 1.3 million tons of solid bulk, 1.3 million tons of containerized cargo in 1.2 million TEU, and 284.1 thousand tons of general cargo. The Port of Acajutla also handled 5.9 million tons of petroleum and derivatives, of which 1.4 million tons were imported and 50.3 thousand tons were exported.
Multi-purpose Wharf “A” is 321 meters long with alongside depths from 8.84 meters to 10.36 meters (depending on the tide). The cargo-handling area covers 11.6 thousand square meters. Multi-purpose Wharf “C” is 280 meters long with alongside depths from 11.9 meters to 14.9 meters (depending on the tide).
The Port of Acajutla’s Wharf “B” specializes in handling solid bulk cargoes. Its south quay is 318 meters long with alongside depths from 8.2 meters to 10.5 meters (depending on the tide), and its north quay is 348 meters long with alongside depths from 7 meters to 9.5 meters. The wharf has a crane and conveyors for handling bulk cargoes. The south quay is used for both imports and exports, and the north quay is dedicated to exports, including containerized exports.
The Port of Acajutla contains ample storage space. The general cargo warehouse covers 26.3 thousand square meters and has capacity for 113.9 metric tons of goods. The solid bulk warehouse covers 2.4 thousand square meters and has capacity for 12 thousand tons. A separate warehouse for solid bulk imports covers 2.5 thousand square meters and has capacity to store 18 thousand metric tons of cargo. Both bulk warehouses are equipped with conveyor bands. The vehicle yard covers an area of 39.8 thousand square meters and has capacity to store up to 2034 vehicles. The container yard covers 48 thousand square meters and has capacity for 4191 TEUs stacked on three levels.
