JSC Novorolesexport provides and maintains the facilities in the Port of Novorossiysk for the fast and efficient handling of cargo vessels. The Port of Novorossiysk has 11 berths totaling more than 1.4 kilometers in length with alongside depth of from 6.8 to 13.9 meters.
The Port of Novorossiysk served 316 vessel calls in 2008. In 2008, the Port of Novorossiysk handled a total of 989 thousand tons (almost 1.8 million cubic meters) of timber materials and 278.7 thousand tons of other cargoes. The Port of Novorossiysk handled a total of 182 thousand TEUs of containerized cargo, including 90.8 thousand TEUs of exports and 91.1 thousand TUEs of imports.
Handling containerized cargoes, Berths 28, 28A, 29, and 30 total 574 meters in length and have alongside depths from 8 to 13 meters. Berths 31 and 31A specialize in handling timber, plywood in packs, and sawn timber in packs. Berth 31 is 118 meters long with alongside depth of 6.4 meters, and Berth 31A is 96 meters long with alongside depth of 6 meters. Berths 32/1 through 32/5 handle timber and other cargoes. Totaling 642 meters in length, the berths have alongside depths from 5.6 to 7.7 meters. Berths range from 108 meters long with alongside depth of 6.7 meters to 146 meters long with alongside depth of 7.7 meters. In addition to timber products, the berths handle non-ferrous metals, perishable cargoes, and wine materials.
The Port of Novorossiysk maintains warehouse areas for open and secured storage. The Port of Novorossiysk has 51 hectares of storage space for timber and general cargoes and 14 hectares for containers. The secured warehouses specialize in plywood and fiberboard and cover over 14.5 thousand square meters with capacity for storing 19.4 thousand cubic meters of cargo. Open storage facilities for sawn timber cover 229.7 thousand square meters and have capacity for 193.6 thousand cubic meters of cargo. Open storage for containers covers 140 thousand square meters with capacity for over 10.2 thousand TEUs.
The Port of Novorossiysk has extensive transportation infrastructure and facilities. The port contains 19 railway lines, 13 of them used for loading/unloading cargoes. The Port of Novorossiysk railways extend for 7.5 kilometers and can handle 169 railway cars. The Timber Terminal has five loading/unloading rails with capacity for 69 railway cars. The Container Terminal has three loading/unloading rails with capacity for 69 railway cars. In addition to the rails, the Port of Novorossiysk has roads with capacity for 100 automobiles per day.
As the only specialized timber port in south Russia, the Port of Novorossiysk boasts state-of-the-art technologies and services on par with any port in Europe. The Timber Terminal loads and unloads vessels, provides for temporary timber storage, and transfers timber from rail to/from ships. The major cargo categories handled in the Port of Novorossiysk include sawn timber in hard transport packages and plywood, fiberboard, and hardboard in packages. Cargoes are transshipped from rail and motor transport to vessels fitted for these cargoes. The Timber Terminal is the location for Berths 31, 31A, and 32/1 through 32/5. The Port of Novorossiysk's Timber Terminal has roofed storehouses for veneer and fiberboard that cover more than 14.5 thousand square meters and have capacity for 19.4 thousand cubic meters of cargo. Ground storage facilities cover 229.7 thousand square meters and have capacity for storing more than 213 thousand cubic meters of converted timber. The Port of Novorossiysk Timber Terminal handles cargo throughput of three million metric meters per year.
The Port of Novorossiysk handles cargoes other than timber and timber goods at the same berths. Cargo throughput of these other cargoes at the Port of Novorossiysk is about 404.8 thousand tons per year. The port expects the volume of these cargoes to decrease as the volume of timber cargoes increases.
The Port of Novorossiysk handles non-ferrous metals (zinc, lead, tin, aluminum, and copper) in packages and bundles. It handles metal goods (plate iron, rolled iron, steel reinforcement, and pipes) in packages, rolls, packs, and bundles.
The Port of Novorossiysk also handles general cargo and grains in big bags, perishable cargoes, and wine materials. The Port of Novorossiysk provides cold storage for perishable cargoes and forwarding services. The refrigerator store has nine sections with a total area of more than 3.7 thousand square meters and capacity for up to five thousand tons. Temperatures vary from 0 °C (32 °F) to -25 °C (-13 °F).
The Port of Novorossiysk also handles dangerous cargoes in big bags, boxes, and on pallets. The port provides both open and secured warehousing with railways and roads for these goods.
Opened in 1999, the Port of Novorossiysk's Container Terminal continues to handle increasing numbers of containers and provide better services. The terminal handles containers, provides storage in the warehouse area, and supports the loading and discharge of container platforms for distribution. The Port of Novorossiysk handles about 350 thousand TEUs of containerized cargo per year.
The Container Terminal uses Berths 28 (162 meters long with alongside depth of 9.3 meters), 28A (100 meters long with alongside depth of 8 meters), 29 (182 meters long with A13 meters), and 30 (122.8 meters long with alongside depth of 13 meters).
The Container Terminal in the Port of Novorossiysk has capacity to handle up to 5000 TEUs and to accommodate Panamax container vessels. The terminal is equipped for seaside and railway loading, sorting and warehousing containers, storing refrigerated reefer containers, restuffing, and performing customs inspections of containers.
