Narvik Havn KF is the port authority responsible for the Port of Narvik. The Port of Narvik is an ice-free port, benefitting from proximity to the Gulf Stream currents. Located some 55 kilometers from the Norwegian Sea on the Ofotfjorden inlet, it is also protected from wind and weather.
Today, the Port of Narvik is an intermodal port with connections by sea, road, and rail to inland Norway and Sweden. It is Norway’s biggest dry-bulk transit port. The Port of Narvik has a modern infrastructure that can handle all kinds and sizes of vessels, and its deep-water quay is not limited in the draft it can accommodate. The Port of Narvik has the only container gantry crane in northern Norway.
The Port of Narvik’s bulk cargo section includes a bulk pier and an iron ore berth. The central area contains Nordkaia for domestic cargo, two piers, and smaller quays and an oil jetty. Pier 1 receives most of the cruise vessels that call at the Port of Narvik.
The Port of Narvik Terminal includes the Fagernes deep-water quay with a roll-on/roll-off ramp. The quay at this public terminal is 230 meters long with alongside depth of 15 meters, and it covers about ten thousand square meters.
Pier 1-B is 140 meters long on the inside and 143 meters long on the outside. It has alongside depth of 7-8 meters on the inside and 6 meters on the outside. The quay covers about 1500 square meters.
Operated by NorLines, the Nordkaia terminal at the Port of Narvik is located near Pier 1. At 83 meters long with alongside depths from 4 to 5.5 meters, the quay covers about 900 square meters, and the area behind the terminal covers about three thousand square meters. The Nordakaia Terminal handles general cargo.
The Port of Narvik’s Pier 2-C receives smaller vessels. Near Pier 1, it is 95 meters long on the inside and 85 meters long on the outside with alongside depths from 4-5 meters on the inside and 3-5 meters on the outside. Pier 2-C has very limited space on and behind the pier.
Recently completed, the new Northern East-West Freight Corridor was established to establish a freight corridor between Russia and China and the United States’ East Coast through the Port of Narvik. The concept is that the company “New Corridor AS” will organize and coordinate transport operations and provide a one-stop shop for containers. The Port of Narvik believes that this new transport route will relieve other already-busy trade routes.
