The Port Authority of Ancona (Autorita Portuale de Ancona) is responsible for operating and managing the Port of Ancona. The Consultative Commission for each port in Italy was established by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport. The commission for the Port of Ancona includes experts in port-related fields who serve four-year terms.

With an important location on the major Adriatic and Mediterranean trade routes, the port authority works hard to assure that the Port of Ancona is equipped with modern facilities and infrastructure. In addition to being center for commercial shipping, the Port of Ancona is an important point for passenger traffic between Italy, Greece, and the Middle East.

The Port of Ancona has over six kilometers of quays with depths to 15 meters, 25 piers, almost 20 kilometers of rail tracks, sixteen yards, and two dry docks. It is a true multi-functional port serving east central Italy.

In 2005, the Port of Ancona handled a total 9.2 million tons of cargo that included over 5 million tons of liquid bulk, more than 1.5 million tons of solid bulk, almost 2.2 million tons of goods in trailers, and 455 thousand tons of containerized cargo in 85.4 thousand TEUs. Cargoes included 6.5 million tons of imports and almost 2.7 million tons of exports. Liquid bulk cargoes handled by the Port of Ancona were dominated by mineral oils. Solid bulks were dominated by coal (393.9 thousand tons), oil (380.7 thousand tons), kaolin and cement (291.3 thousand tons), and cereals (219.4 thousand tons). Other solid bulk cargoes included metal products, crude and manufactured minerals, forage, waste iron and steel, and food. The Port of Ancona also handled 312.4 thousand vehicles in 2005.

The Port of Ancona also served more than 1.5 million passengers in 2005, including over 39 thousand cruise passengers. The vast majority of passengers used ferries to travel to and from Greece (over one million), and over 386 thousand passengers traveled between the Port of Ancona and Croatia.

Dorica Port Services was formed in 2000 to manage cargo and passenger traffic in the Port of Ancona. Employed by the port authority, Dorica Port Services provides logistical and informational services and coordinates traffic with the international airport in the Port of Ancona. The company provides expertise in service and languages essential for the multi-national users of the Port of Ancona.
