The Port of Bandar Abbas is composed of two sections. The new port area is called the Shahid Rajaie Port Complex, and the older port is called Shahid Bahonar.

The Port of Bandar Abbas' Shahid Rajaie Port Complex (Shahid Rajaie) is a large complex at the food of the Gachin and Kashar mountains about 30 kilometers (12.4 miles) west of the city. The port area at the Port of Bandar Abbas' Shahid Rajaie covers 1,598,000 square meters (). Today, it contains 164,000 square meters () of warehousing space, and an additional 44,220 square meters () is under construction.

Shahid Rajaie contains a turning basin with three secondary Port of Bandar Abbas basins with wharves, berths, warehouses, and related facilities. Among the most important projects in this part of the Port of Bandar Abbas are a grain silo, expanded cargo and container storage areas, and a fishing harbor that can support coastal traffic. The Seamen's Club in the Shahid Rajaie area of the Port of Bandar Abbas offers recreational facilities that are popular with all seamen.

The Port of Bandar Abbas was ratified by Iran's high council of Free Trade Zone as a special economic area. With direct rail links, this status makes the Port of Bandar Abbas a gateway for cargoes moving to/from Central Asia. The Port of Bandar Abbas has modern port facilities that include 24 loading booths for ocean-going vessels and a variety of well-appointed storage facilities. The economic zone is open to Persian Gulf and other companies who are attracted by the lack of customs procedures and tariffs. Manufacturers and traders can get special long-term rental rates for their facilities at the Port of Bandar Abbas special economic zone.

The Shahid Rajaie area of the Port of Bandar Abbas has ten berths for general cargo with a total length of 2000 meters (6562 feet) and alongside depths from 11 to 14 meters (36.1 to 45.9 feet). The Port of Bandar Abbas' container terminal has five berths with a total length of 1000 meters (3281 feet) and alongside depth of 14 meters (45.9 feet). There are four berths totaling 720 meters (2362 feet) in length with alongside depths from 11 to 14 meters for special cargoes, including dry bulk.

The Port of Bandar Abbas' Shahid Rajaie area has two multi-purpose berths handling cargoes like liquid bulk. These berths total 400 meters (1312 feet) in length and have alongside depths from 11 to 14 meters.

There are also two berths in the Port of Bandar Abbas' Shahid Rajaie area for import and export of liquid cargoes, particularly oil. These berths total 440 meters (1443 feet) in length with alongside depth of 11.5 meters (37.7 feet). The berth at the Port of Bandar Abbas' Foulad Oil Terminal for the discharge of crude oil is 250 meters (820 feet) long with alongside depth of 13 meters (42.7 feet). The STC Quay is a private oil transit pier in the Port of Bandar Abbas. It is less than 200 meters (656 feet) long with alongside depths from 8 to 10 meters (26.2 to 32.8 feet).

The roll-on/roll-off platform and passenger berth in the Shahid Rajaie area of the Port of Bandar Abbas is 100 meters (328 feet) long with alongside depth of nine meters (29.5 feet). The service berths for barges are 240 meters (787 feet) long.

The berths in the Shahid Rajaie area of the Port of Bandar Abbas have modern hoisting and cargo-handling machinery that includes gantry cranes, shore cranes, high-lift mobile cranes, hoppers, and hydroelectric grabs. The Port of Bandar Abbas can accept bulk carriers up to 100 thousand DWT and tankers up to 80 thousand DWT.

The Shahid Bahonar area is the Port of Bandar Abbas' old port. It is located north of Qeshm Island at the Port of Bandar Abbas' entrance to the Persian Gulf eight kilometers (five miles) west of the city. The Shahid Bahonar area of the Port of Bandar Abbas covers 30 hectares, and it contains nine hectares of warehouse space.

As the main gateway to the regional economy, the Shahid Bahonar area in the Port of Bandar Abbas contains many important industrial projects, including the Bandar Abbas Refinery, that play a key role in Iran's economy. A new railway system, paved roads, and airlines link the Port of Bandar Abbas to Tehran and other trade centers.

The Port of Bandar Abbas' Shahid Bahonar area contains eleven berths. Six berths are dedicated for general cargoes. They total 1050 meters (3445 feet) in length with alongside depth of 10 meters (32.8 feet). Two berths (Charlie 1 and 5) are used to load and discharge oil. These berths are 380 meters (1247 feet) long with alongside depth of 10 meters. There is one ore-loading berth in the Shahid Bahonar area of the Port of Bandar Abbas that is 190 meters (623 feet) long with alongside depth of 10 meters.
