Shannon Foynes Port Company (SFPC) manages and operates the Limerick Docks and the Port of Foynes, a nearby deep-water seaport. SFPC is a commercial semi-state organization established pursuant to the Harbours Act of 1996.
The Limerick Docks contain quays of a total 914 meters with alongside depth that depends on the tides and ranges from .5 meters to 1.2 meters. The berths can accommodate vessels to 152 meters long. The Limerick Docks also contain 5.7 thousand square meters of warehouse space, including 2.8 thousand square meters of new storage for bulk cargoes.
The Limerick Docks covers 17.8 hectares of land, and the port handles about 550 thousand tons of cargo each year. Over the coming years, it is possible that the Limerick Docks traffic will be transferred to the Port of Foynes about 40 kilometers nearer the Atlantic Ocean on the Shannon Estuary.
