The Port of Sunderland is owned by the Sunderland City Council that has embarked on a 15-20 year program to revamp the port and bring formerly non-operation lands into use. They plan to convert the Port of Sunderland into a new employer and environmentally-friendly business district. The Council became the Statutory Harbour Authority in 1972.

The Port of Sunderland is a short-sea specialist offering a highly-skilled in-house workforce, competitive charges, rail access complete with its own locomotives, and road links. The Port of Sunderland’s harbor entrance is 213 meters long with draught of 8.2 meters. The South Docks are almost 142 meters long with alongside depths from 7.2 to 8.1 meters, depending on the tide.

The Port of Sunderland offers a deep-water riverside berth for dry cargo. The quay is 323 meters long with alongside depth of 8.8 meters. It includes four thousand square meters of warehouse space and 9.3 thousand square meters of open storage.

The Port of Sunderland’s Herdon Dock specializes in forest products and other neo-bulk cargo. The quay is 207 meters long with alongside depth of 9.45 meters at high

Hendon Dock at the Port of Sunderland is specially equipped to receive forest products, as well as other neo bulk cargoes. The quay is 207 meters long with maximum alongside depth of 9.5 meters. The dock includes 3.9 thousand square meters of warehouse and 3.7 thousand square meters of open storage.

Used seasonally for dolomite shipments, the Port of Sunderland’s East Quay South handles general and bulk cargoes at a 183-meter long quay with maximum alongside depth of 9.62 meters. The East Quay South offers two 270 cubic meter storage bins and four thousand square meters of open storage.

The Greenwells Quay handles dry cargoes at a 220-meter-long quay with two berthing stations, one 150 meters long with alongside depth of 6.3 meters and the second at 70 meters long with alongside depth of 5.7 meters. The Greenwells Quay contains 17 acres of open storage and a private sector development offering nine thousand square meters of covered storage. The quay also has a roll-on/roll-off ramp.
