Based in the Port of Nieuwpoort, Loodswezen manages nautical traffic in Belgium’s coastal waters and shipping lanes. Managing 220 professional Pilots that make more than 62 thousand trips a year, Loodswezen is the premiere pilot corporation in the Netherlands. Pilots specialize in specific harbors, water areas, and types of vessel.

Loodswezen was formed more than 400 years ago. In 1988, the organization became an independent, non-government organization responsible for assuring qualified pilots were available 24 hours a day. The registered pilots are shareholders in Nederland Loodswezen BV, a partnership between the pilots and the owners of the vessels they use.

In 2005, over 400 registered pilots handled 95,000 ship movements within the Dutch ports.
