Port of Brownsville

In the city of Brownsville in the county of Cameron, Texas can be found the Port of Brownsville. The port provides efficient services that facilitate international shipment of goods and commodities between Mexico and the United States. Within the port, the United States' Inland Waterway System is linked with the Mexican land transportation system.

The port was opened in 1936, just 17 miles (27 kilometers) from the Brazos Santiago Pass and the Gulf of Mexico. Brownsville sits on the United States side of the Rio Grande River, just across the border from Matamoros, Mexico.

Like most developed ports, the Port of Brownsville has turned into an industrial development center. There are close to 230 firms conducting and operating businesses within the facility. Major business activities include ship dismantling and repair, offshore drilling rigs construction, rail car rehabilitation, grain shipment and storage and bulk terminal facilitation, among others.
