The Port of Kochi is located on the south coast of Shikoku on Tosa Bay. The people live on the Tosa plain, which is for the most part surrounded by mountains. The Port of Kochi’s main products are agricultural machinery and implements, limestone, coral, processed seafood, paper, and raw silk.
Port History
Kochi city was the capital of former Tosa province. Kochi Castle was constructed in 1603 and restored in the 18th century after its destruction by fire. It’s thought to be one of the most elegant castles in Japan. The Port of Kochi is home to over 300 thousand people.
Port Commerce
The Port of Kochi is administered by the Port, Harbor, and Airport Administration Bureau of the Kochi Prefecture Government. They have developed a harbor plan for the 21st Century that aims at expanding the port’s position as an international multi-purpose port and making the Urado Gulf a natural conservation area and open water space.
The plan includes enlarging the area for containerized ships and moving half the current cargo-handling capacity to Kochi New Port. Separating the port functions will make the port more competitive. They’ll transfer the distribution functions currently in the Urado Gulf to the new Port of Kochi to better connect transportation routes to the peripheral regions of Ushioe.
Cruising
The plan also calls for making Katsurahama a more attractive site for tourism. They’ll increase the area for mooring of recreational boats and ships and form amenity spaces. The city provides convenient trams for city sightseeing. Called “Toden” by the locals, the Tosa-Dentetsu has operated for 100 years.
