Port of Kisarazu

The Port of Kisarazu is in Chiba prefecture in Honshu, Japan, about 32 kilometers southeast of Tokyo, across the Tokyo Bay on the west coast of the Boso peninsula.

Port History
Being on the delta of the Obitsu River entering Tokyo Bay, the Port of Kisarazu was an early commercial center for the region. During the Edo period (1603-1867), it had exclusive rights on sea traffic between Tokyo and the western Boso Peninsula.

In medieval times, the Kisarazu craftsman, the Kazusa caster, is believed to have cast the Giant Buddha in Kamakura. During the Edo period, Kisarazu’s five boats traveled between Edo (now Tokyo) and Kisarazu, transporting goods. The Kisarazu Prefecture was established in 1871 with the Port of Kisarazu as its capital. From that time until the end of the century, steamships were introduced that increased commerce and the city’s prosperity. In 1912, the Kisarazu Line and station opened on the railway.

The City of Kisarazu was founded in 1942 when nearby towns and villages were merged. Ferry services to Kawasaki and Yokohama started in 1965, and the Port of Kisarazu was recognized as an important Japanese port in 1968. In 1975, the Nakanoshima Bridge was completed. The Port of Kisarazu became sister city to the City of Oceanside, California, in 1990, and it was designated as a Japanese business core city in 1992.

Port Commerce
Today, the Port of Kisarazu is an integral part of the Keiyo Coastal Industrial Zone, and it is undergoing major expansion efforts. In 1996, a new 719-meter wharf was opened. The public wharves of the Port of Kisarazu are divided into the inner harbor, Kisarazu South and Futtsu districts.

The inner harbor has a 788-meter long lighter's wharf. Kisarazu South contains over 1.6 kilometers of wharf with from 4- to 12-meter draft and 11 berths. The Futtsu district has over 640 meters of wharf with depths from 5.5 to 7.3 meters. The port’s cargo handling area covers over 14 hectares and contains 7.2 hectares of open storage. In 2006, the Port of Kisarazu handled over 42 million tons of foreign cargo and over 22 million tons of domestic cargo.
