Port of Kinuura

The Port of Kinuura is located on Chita Bay on the southeastern Pacific coast of Japan’s largest island, Honshu, in the Aichia prefecture.

Port History
Between the early 1600s and middle 1800s (the Edo period), today’s Aichi prefecture was the country’s center for the cultivation of cotton and manufacturing. Its capital city, Nagoya, is about 32 kilometers northwest of the Port of Kinuura.

The Port of Kinuura is about half-way between the cities of Handa on the western Chita Peninsula and Hekinan on the eastern Atsumi Peninsula. The two peninsulas form Chita Bay, the northern branch of the Mikawa Bay, located about 322 kilometers southwest of Tokyo. A central pier extends from Handa to Hekinan, with a break for a channel where vessel can travel up the Yahagi River.

Handa was an important commercial port for the Aichi prefecture during the Edo, producing processed foods and cotton. Hekinan was formed by the merger of three towns that included Ohama, which was an important port for shipping rice, sake, and salt to Edo (Tokyo) during the same period. The area has also contained a large beach fishing port since the Edo period in the early 14th Century.

Port Commerce
The Port of Kinuura (Japanese website) was developed as an industrial port serving local manufacturing industries producing primarily transportation equipment and steel. The Chita area is dominated by the machinery industry, and high-technology industries are growing rapidly in the area. The Port of Kinuura covers an area of 4000 hectares of water and 2000 hectares of land.

The Port of Kinuura harbor plan seeks to strengthen the port’s distribution function through improved use of existing facilities, reorganizations, and creating production space for new industry inside the port. The plan addresses the needs of residents by opening some of the shoreline to improve the harbor environment and improving port recreational functions. The Port of Kinuura is also working on preparedness for earthquake emergencies, including evacuation planning and strengthening existing quays to withstand earthquakes. The plan also seeks to improve the harborside traffic system.
